Wooden Mosaic Craftworks (寄木細工)

History goes back to the late 18th Century in Hatajuku village in the middle of Hakone mountain near to Odawara city. The village locates in the forest where various wooden resources were available. The technic was established by Jinbei Ishikawa. The tradition has been certified by the government since 1984 as National Traditional Craftwork.
Opening procedure (this is 7-steps-box)
1. Slide the horizontal side panel.
2. Slide entire side panel vertically downward.
3~4. Repeat the 1~2 steps to increase the openings.
5. Slide the side bar horizontally to the left.
6. Slide the entire side panel vertically downward.
7. Slide the lid to open the box.
All the 7 steps.
The easiest is 4 steps and the longest is 21 steps.
Variety of trays, hexagonal and rectangular shapes.
A view from the center of Odawara city facing to the Pacific ocean and the foot of Hakone mountains can be seen on the right side. The area is a nice sight-seeing destination from Tokyo by the rich sea food and the Spa (Onsen).
