Byobu (屏風) / Mukojima / Tokyo

Byobu (folding screen) has history of more than 1300years in Japan. It was used as a wind screen in houses during winter in the beginning. As time went by, it became an interior to present precious paintings and writings. Byobu is the ideal method to save graphical arts as it can be folded and stored.

Byobu is created by the traditional processes and skills. Every piece is hand manufactured with wooden structure and finished by Japanese craft paper that provides strength to go beyond generations.

Structure is made of domestic cedar from Akita Prefecture that ensures precise dimensions for years of use.

No metallic hinge is used to connect each panel but Japanese craft paper joins them and ensures long life. The unique joining system provides over 180 ° opening.

Metallic foils of gold/silver/brass can be used for special decoration. Those foils have thickness of less than a micron.
